Midnight Crystal Book Three of the Dreamlight Trilogy Jayne Castle 9780515148367 Books

On the one hand, this third installment of the Dreamlight trilogy does not have the charm of the first two books. It is filled with all of the "Rez" sci-if jargon typical to Harmony books and involves a slightly edgier brand of sex scenes. On the other hand, it has a terrific dust bunny, who is charming in his own right. I would have liked a little more to the dust bunny story. A secondary story could have flitted through this easily. If nothing else, something that tied the dust bunny behavior together could have been tacked onto the end, although I did enjoy the little ending that we did get. Nevertheless, Gibson's presence made me waver as to whether to give this story four or five stars. I decided on four stars, because of the flaws I mentioned. Had Gibson's story been a tad more involved, I would have given the story five stars. However, I still enjoyed the book and recommend it, particularly to anyone who has read the first two books in the trilogy and to those who enjoy the Harmony series.

Midnight Crystal Book Three of the Dreamlight Trilogy Jayne Castle 9780515148367 Books Reviews

If you saw these three names, Gibson, Adam, Marlowe, would you know which referred to a woman, which referred to a man, and which referred to a dust bunny? A dust bunny is a small creature with lots of hair that is small enough to sit on the shoulder of a human and be a companion in this alien world of Harmony. I struggled through this entire book trying to keep in mind that Marlowe was the female character in this story. It did not come easily, in fact it made me downright irritated time after time. But hey, that's okay, because it just matched the rest of the book which also made me downright irritated.

I started reading the Jayne Castle stories about Harmony when the first one was published. I loved the alien world Castle had created that mirrored so much of Earth, but was completely cut off from Earth. I loved the Ghost Hunters of the Guild who went down underground and fought the energy ghosts and kept the whole world safe. I loved the women who had other paranormal talents that often put them in opposition to the Guild and the Bosses so that the confrontations were truly marvelous to watch. I lost track of this series when the Jayne Ann Krentz/Amanda Quick/Jayne Castle books turned into "trilogies" where each author contributed a book featuring the section of the story which took place within her writing specialty time frame. Always remembering, of course, that these three authors are actually the same person. I honestly wish I had just left it with the last book I read.

This book was not even recognizable as belonging to the same series as the other Ghost Hunter books I read. Oh, sure it had the trappings. A Guild Boss, a dust bunny pet, a female lead with a paranormal talent. But where, I ask, was the sparkling dialog? the engaging plot? the tension that built between the male and female lead? It certainly wasn't in this book, at least not for me. There is no life to these characters, especially Marlowe Jones. She is so wooden it's a wonder Adam didn't get splinters when he touched her. And that old feud between the Winters and the Joneses got so old and boring it made me want to yell at them. Enough already! Enough of having an author try to advertise her other books within the pages of the one I'm reading. This style of giving the characters a problem and letting them solve it within a few pages just so the author could give them another problem was a technique that certainly didn't win any awards from me. In fact, all I wanted was for the whole thing to be over. Let me move on and not ever wonder about this series again. I am SO disappointed.
MIDNIGHT CRYSTAL is the third and final book in the Dreamlight Trilogy. It is the story of Adam Winters and Marlowe Jones. The Winters and Jones families have been at the heart of Arcane Society since its founding in the seventeenth century when two alchemists with paranormal talents were at first friends and then bitter enemies. Both tried to enhance their paranormal abilities with dangerous consequences. Nicholas Winters used the Burning Lamp to enhance his talent and as a result some of his male descendants get the "curse" where they need the Burning Lamp and a woman who can help work the lamp in order to stabilize their talent.

On the futuristic world of Harmony, Adam Winters needs the Burning Lamp and a woman who can help him. He is contacted by Marlowe Jones because the Burning Lamp has been stolen. The two must work together to find the lamp and ultimately all of Harmony.

Marlowe Jones is a strong, independent woman. Because of her talent, she doesn't believe that she will ever find love. She and Adam have an immediate connection and it is so strong that their families immediately realize it. Since the seventeenth century, the two families have had an uneasy relationship since Nicholas Winters is said to have created to Burning Lamp in order to have one of his descendants destroy the Jones family.

The two end of in a serious relationship although Marlowe doesn't want to believe that she could actually have found Mr. Right. The tension in the romantic relationship is Marlowe's fear that she cannot have a long term relationship with a man. The connection between the two is obvious and although Adam is one of those alpha males, he also is entirely willing to have Marlowe as a full partner in their adventures.

What I like here is that the story of the Burning Lamp is resolved midway through this book and thus it allows the plot of this specific book to take precedence. It satisfies the long term story of the trilogy and yet gives this book a new separate plot that doesn't require a reader to have read the previous books in the trilogy to appreciate.

MIDNIGHT CRYSTAL is also the ninth book in the Arcane Society series about those with paranormal talents. This series goes from historicals (Amanda Quick), contemporaries (Jayne Ann Krentz) and futuristics (Jayne Castle). In addition, this book is also part of the Harmony series (number 7) about the earth colony where life is similar to an early 21st century earth.

While this book crosses many series, it is not really necessary to have read all those books.
