This volume, "Miles in Love" is the tail end of a wonderful series where the hero finally gets his girl. Starting in the book " Warrior's Apprentice" you meet young Miles, a military hungry man who is denied the military postings he truly desires due to birth deformities. He's short, hunchbacked, big headed, full of charisma and blarney caused his parents to send him off planet to visit grandma and get an education. But before he could get there he runs into a situation where he ends up talking his way out of being kidnapped and into the position of Admiring a mercenary fleet of war ships ( fulfilling his dream without all the in between stuff). This is how Miles begins an awesome, fun, clever adventure around the universe until that part of his life ends when he is killed in action and is resuscitated back to life. This is where the story, Miles In Love begins. Miles, unable to tell anyone of his admiraling days due to his government cover ups is put back into use as voice of his Emperor as he now over comes the new health challenge of seizures. His first job brings him to the first woman who ever had an interest to following him back to his home planet. But with a woman on a planet where the men out number the ladies, Miles puts his military expertise to use to court her with out her knowing. As a young widow she has many suitors that Miles has to start fending off. This leads to many humorous moments for Miles and your self as you immerse yourself in the world of Miles.

I have enjoyed the Vorkosigan books ever since I read my first one in the early 1990's. This compilation provides two novels and a novella that bring the story of Miles Vorkosigan's life to a new level of committed love, beginning with "Komarr," in which Miles falls in love while solving a mystery, continuing with "A Civil Campaign," in which Miles is involved in intrigues and shenanigans leading up to the emperor's wedding, and culminating in the novella "Winterfair Gifts," a story told from the point of view of one of Miles's armsmen about the long-expected Vorkosigan wedding. The two novels are available in their own single editions but the novella is only otherwise available as part of an anthology that is becoming hard to find.

Of the three, "A Civil Campaign" is the most densely plotted and, to me, the most interesting. The novel "Komarr," with its alternating points of view, dragged a bit at times but led up to an exciting and unexpected finish. The novella provided an interesting plot to go with the expected wedding, but I was rather disappointed that this momentous event in Miles's life didn't receive a longer treatment. For Vorkosigan fans, all three are good books and good reads, and fans will want a copy of "Winterfair Gifts," whether in this edition or in the elusive anthology where it was first published.

Unfortunately and very annoyingly, this edition is full of typographical errors. They range from the startling (in one sentence Miles is referred to as "she") to the incomprehensibly careless (words with a letter replaced by a comma or other punctuation mark). Sometimes there are three or more within a single paragraph. It makes for maddening reading.

With that caveat, I give it my tepid recommendation. I do have the other anthology (called "Irresistible Forces," for the curious) but wanted to have the compilation. I would be much happier with my purchase if it were not so riddled with typos.
A Civil Campaign, written as a regency romance crossed with space opera (but mostly that Georgette Heyer-esque regency tone), has long been my favourite Miles book. On this re-read, however, Komal has overtaken ACC. Miles has a frenetic energy to him that I think leads to fast paced action-driven books. These books are the calm, a pivotal change and the beginning of a new Miles. I like this new Miles. He’s grown up.

How about ALL of the above!? Lois McMaster Bujold writes that way! And, this is one of her very best stories!
This book is two full length novels that are closely connected that have been bound together (Komarr - book 11 and A Civil Campaign - book 12). The main character, Miles, is no longer in the military, however there is still some action. However, the first novel is more a detective story, while the second explores Miles' home planet's society. Together the novels encompass a love story (hence the title). I was impressed with the characters in the stories. They were unique, yet easily related to. I've enjoyed all the Vorkosigan novels I've read, and this one seemed something of a change in pace from the military/space opera stories I was used to, but at least as entertaining.
